PRELUDE                                                                                                                     Chris Pierce

Come in, all who are tired and thirsty.

The Good Shepherd leads us to grassy meadows and restful waters.

Come in, all who are anxious and afraid.

The Good Shepherd protects us and leads us through dark valleys.

Come in, all who are empty and exhausted.

The Good Shepherd fills our lives with goodness and faithful love.

Come in, to be refreshed, to rest, and to receive.

The Good Shephard has brought us here.

God, Beloved Shepherd, Guardian of our souls, we come to listen for your familiar voice.  Call to us above the noise of our lives.  Gather us in from our comings and goings. Feed us in the pastures of your love and lead us to abundant life.  Amen.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures;

he leads me beside still waters;

he restores my soul.

He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil;

for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,

and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.

GOSPEL READING                                                                                                    John 10:1-10

“Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.”

Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

HYMN                                              The King of Love My Shepherd Is                         UMH 138

The King of love my Shepherd is

Whose goodness faileth never;

I nothing lack if I am His

And He is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow

My ransomed soul He leadeth,

And, where the verdant pastures grow,

With food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,

But yet in love He sought me,

And on His shoulder gently laid,

And home rejoicing brought me.

And so through all the length of days
Thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise
Within Thy house forever.

OUR LORD’S PRAYER ~ Together, we pray…

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

OFFERING OF OURSELVES & OUR GIFTS                                           2 Corinthians 9:6 – 11

HYMN                                                         Close to Thee                                              UMH 407

v.1 Thou my everlasting Portion,

More than friend or life to me,

All along my pilgrim journey,

Savior, let me walk with Thee.

Close to Thee, close to Thee,

Close to Thee, close to Thee;

All along my pilgrim journey,

Savior, let me walk with Thee.

v.2 Not for ease or worldly pleasure,

Not for fame my prayer shall be;

Gladly will I toil and suffer,

Only let me walk with Thee.

Close to Thee, close to Thee,

Close to Thee, close to Thee;

Gladly will I toil and suffer,

Only let me walk with Thee.

v.3 Lead me through the vale of shadows,

Bear me o’er life’s fitful sea;

Then the gate of life eternal

May I enter, Lord, with Thee.

Close to Thee, close to Thee,

Close to Thee, close to Thee;

Then the gate of life eternal

May I enter, Lord, with Thee.

As you go out into the world, practice being sheep.  Staying close with the shepherding God. And listen for the voice of the shepherd calling to you.  May our shepherding God keep you from harm and lead you into abundant life and Christ’s service this week.  Amen.
